Tuesday July 12 - All Star Game

The American League defeated the National League 2-1 in the All Star Game held at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati tonight.  Cal Ripken was the only member of the Orioles to make the team - he was voted in as the starting shortstop for the AL.  It was Cal's sixth All Star game and the fifth consecutive time he was elected to the starting lineup.  He would go on to appear in 19 All Star games and was elected to the starting lineup 16 consecutive years from 1984 to 1999.

Ripken played eight innings of the game going 0 for 3 with a walk on the night.  He was replaced in the field by Kurt Stilwell of the Royals going into the bottom of the ninth.  The Athletics' Terry Steinbach took the game's MVP award thanks to his solo home run in the third inning off of Dwight Gooden of the Mets.
