Ripken played eight innings of the game going 0 for 3 with a walk on the night. He was replaced in the field by Kurt Stilwell of the Royals going into the bottom of the ninth. The Athletics' Terry Steinbach took the game's MVP award thanks to his solo home run in the third inning off of Dwight Gooden of the Mets.
