Thursday August 4 vs the Indians

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: W
Score: 5-0
Streak: W3
Record: 35-71
Rank: 7th
GB: 28

It was "Three Buck Night" so I was of course at this game.  And I wasn't alone.  My brother-in-law was coming into town on business and we had arranged for me to pick him up at BWI Airport and head to the game.  We actually ran into my parents at the airport that afternoon - my 85 year old grandfather in Missouri was going to be undergoing emergency open heart surgery that evening and they were flying out to be with him.  So there was a cloud hanging over us as we made our way out to Memorial Stadium.  We met up with my friend Steve who was there with his former landlady Claire (Steve had rented a room in her house during our senior year in college) and her son Ben (who was ten-ish at the time but somehow unbelievably now is a 40-ish ex-Marine).  I had been hoping that Steve was going to bring this Sabra woman with him that he told me I should meet but it didn't happen.

The Orioles won this evening without getting an earned run.  In fact since the Indians were shut out there were no earned runs at all in this game.  The Birds got their first runs in the third inning.  Eddie Murray led off with a walk and Mickey Tettleton followed with a single.  A passed ball by Indians' catcher Chris Bando with Larry Sheets at the plate moved the runners up although Sheets ultimately struck out.  Murray scored when Ken Gerhart grounded out to shortstop Ron Washington.  The next batter Rick Schu also hit a ground ball to Washington who booted it, allowing Tettleton to move to rhird and Schu to reach first.  Bill Ripken followed with a single to center that scored Tettleton.  Indians center fielder then misplayed the ball for an error that allowed Schu to score and Ripken ended up at third.  Pete Stanicek then grounded out to end the inning.  The Orioles had scored three runs on two hits, two errors, a walk and a passed ball.

They picked up a couple more runs a few innings later.  With two outs Cal Ripken walked and Murray reached on a second error from shortstop Ron Washington.  Tettleton then doubled to bring both runners in and make the score 5-0.  The victory completed the Orioles' first three game series sweep of the season  Their modest three game winning streak was tied for the longest of the season.

My brother-in-law and I must have gotten to the game late because I didn't keep score and I don't have the newspaper clippings from the next day.  I dropped my brother-in-law off at his hotel in downtown Baltimore (which coincidentally was the hotel the Orioles' next opponent - the Milwaukee Brewers - would be staying.  They had a big banner up welcoming them) and headed home.  Shortly after I got home I got a phone call from my father in Missouri letting me know that my grandfather had passed away.  Apparently the surgery had been successful but there were complications from the anesthesia and he never regained consciousness.

Wednesday August 3 vs the Indians

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: W
Score: 8-3
Streak: W2
Record: 34-71
Rank: 7th
GB: 28

It was a little rough early for the Birds but the game quickly turned around for them.  The Indians got on the board in the first inning on an odd play.  With one out Julio Franco singled and Joe Carter followed with another single that moved Franco to third.  Ron Kittle then popped out to first baseman Jim Traber in foul ground.  I'm not quite sure what happened but I think Traber attempted to throw out one of the two baserunners but ended up throwing the ball away.  Franco scored and Carter wound up on third base.  Cory Snyder then lined out to end the inning.  The Indians got a two run home run from Ron Tingly in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead.

But that lead was short lived.  Larry Sheets led off the Orioles' half of the second with a solo home run and Terry Kennedy and Rick Schu followed with singles.  Bill Ripken moved the two base runners up with a sacrifice bunt and Joe Orsulak walked to load the bases.  Brady Anderson then hit a single that scored Kennedy and Schu and tied the game up at 3.  Orsulak moved to third on the hit as well.  Cal Ripken then hit a ground ball to Brook Jacoby at third who somehow didn't get anyone out - Orsulak scored, Anderson went to second and Cal reached first.  It was scored a fielders choice.  The Orioles now lead 4-3, a lead they would not relinquish.

A Kennedy solo home run in the third and an Eddie Murray two run shot in the fourth extended the Birds' lead to 7-3.  They would get an eighth and final run on an RBI single by Bill Ripken in the fifth.

Tuesday August 2 vs the Indians

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: W
Score: 5-2
Streak: W1
Record: 33-71
Rank: 7th
GB: 29

It wasn't a particularly pretty victory but the Orioles would take it tonight.  The Indians got on the board first in the top of the third on a Joe Carter RBI single but the Birds would take the lead in the bottom of the inning.  Ken Gerhart led off the inning with a double.  When he tried to steal third with Larry Sheets at the plate, Cleveland catcher Chris Bando threw the ball down the left field line allowing Gerhart to score the tying run.  Sheets then walked and Rick Schu followed with a double.  Brady Anderson then hit an infield single(?) that brought Sheets in with the second run.  The runners stayed put when Bill Ripken popped out to second for the first out but Cal Ripken hit a fly ball deep enough to bring Schu in from third.  Anderson then stole second with Eddie Murray at bat before Murray walked.  Anderson then came in to score the fourth run of the inning on Mickey Tettleton's single before Jim Traber grounded out to end the inning.

The O's got an insurance run in the eighth on a solo home from Larry Sheets.  Cleveland would get one last run in the top of the ninth when Cory Snyder led off with a triple and then scored on Willie Upshaw's sacrifice fly.

Oswaldo Peraza pitched a complete game to get the victory, scattering eight hits and two walks while striking out six.

Thursday July 28 at Cleveland

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: W
Score: 5-2
Streak: W1
Record: 32-68
Rank: 7th
GB: 27

The Orioles managed to avoid being swept in Cleveland this night but even so managed to find a unique way to kill a rally.  With one out in the second Mickey Tettleton drew a walk and then moved to second on ground out by Ken Gerhart.  Jim Traber then singled to bring in Tettleton with the first run of the ballgame.  The Orioles loaded the bases when Rene Gonzales and Joe Orsulak followed with singles of their own.  Pete Stanicek followed with the Birds' fourth consecutive single which scored Traber but Gonzales stumbled and fell rounding third.  He got up and retreated back to third with the help of a push from Orioles third base coach Mike Hart.  That of course is interference and Gonzales was called out which ended the inning.  But the Orioles had a 2-0 lead.

An out on the bases ended the next inning for the Birds as well.  With two outs Eddie Murray singled and went to second on third baseman Brook Jacoby's throwing error.  Tettleton followed with a single to left but somehow Murray got himself thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.  He made up for his base running gaffe a few innings later when he hit his 17th home run of the year, a solo shot in the sixth to make it 3-0.

The Birds had yet another rally end on a base running out in the seventh.  With two outs Stanicek singled and stole second.  Bill Ripken singled to bring him in but was thrown out at second attempting to take an extra base to end the inning.  Ripken's brother Cal led off the top of the eighth with a solo home run to give the Birds a 5-0 lead.

Meanwhile Oswaldo Peraza had been pitching a pretty good game.  He had held the Indians to only four hits and two walks over the first eight innings but things got a little interesting in the ninth.  With one out, the Tribe picked up a run on three consecutive singles by Joe Carter, Mel Hall and Jacoby.  Orioles manager Frank Robinson lifted Peraza and brought in Tom Niedenfeur, the team's closer.  Niedenfeur was able to get the final two outs although he gave up a hit to Carmelo Castillo that scored Hall with the Indians' second and final run.

Wednesday July 27 at Cleveland

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: L
Score: 2-12
Streak: L3
Record: 31-68
Rank: 7th
GB: 27.5

This one got out of hand pretty quick.  Jose Bautista started for the Birds and he was not a mystery for the Cleveland hitters.  Ron Washington and Terry Francona hit back to back singles to start the game for the Tribe.  Julio Franco doubled to knock in Washington and Joe Carter then hit a three run home run.  So four batters in the Orioles were already down 4-0.  But Bautista was able to get out of the inning without any further trouble.

But trouble showed up again in the bottom of the second.  Chris Bando led off with a single.  After Washington popped out for the first out Francona hit a single that knocked Bautista out of the game.  In came Mike Morgan to relieve him but it didn't make any difference.  Franco greeted Morgan with a bases clearing double to make the score 6-0.  After Carter grounded out for the second out Mel Hall doubled to bring in Franco and Cory Snyder singled to bring in Hall.  A single to Willie Upshaw and a walk to Brook Jacoby loaded the bases.  With Bando at the plate (the tenth man to bat in the inning) Morgan then threw a wild pitch that scored Snyder and moved the other two runners up.  Finally Morgan struck out Bando to end the inning.  After two innings the Indians had sent 18 men to the plate and nine of them had scored.

The Indians didn't let up in the third.  Washington walked to start the inning and Francona got his third hit of the evening in as many innings when he followed with a single.  Then Franco hit his third double of the first three innings and knocked both Washington and Francona in.  Franco ended up stranded at second though as Morgan managed to get the next three batters out.  But Cleveland got yet another run in the fourth after Upshaw led off the inning with a walk and was forced at second on a ground out by Jacoby.  Bando then doubled to put runners on second and third and Jacoby then scored when Washington grounded out.  After four innings the score was 12-0 Cleveland.

Mark Thurmond came in to pitch for the Orioles in the fifth inning and he and Don Aase (who pitched the eighth inning) were able to shut down the Indians' offense the rest of the game on only one hit.  Meanwhile the Orioles got themselves on the board finally in the seventh on a two run home run by Jim Traber.  Tom Candiotti went the distance to pick up the win for the Indians.

Tuesday July 26 at Cleveland

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: L
Score: 3-7
Streak: L2
Record: 31-67
Rank: 7th
GB: 26.5

The Orioles held their own against the Indians over first third of tonight's ballgame.  They got on the board in the top of the first when Joe Orsulak led off the game with a double and scored on next batter Bill Ripken's single but Cleveland tied it up in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back doubles by Terry Francona and Julio Franco and went ahead in the second on a solo home run by Cory Snyder.  The Orioles knotted the game back up at 2 when Orsulak scored on a Larry Sheets grounded out with the bases loaded.

The game got away from the Birds in the fourth.  Mel Hall led off the inning with a single and after Snyder flew out for the first out Willie Upshaw doubled.  The Tribe then got the bases loaded when Brook Jacoby walked and then Chris Bando partly unloaded them with a single that scored Hall and Upshaw.  Ron Washington followed with a single that scored Jacoby but Sheets threw out Bando trying to get to third on the play.  With Francona at the plate Washington stole second which allowed him to score the fourth run of the inning on Francona's single.  Orioles manager Frank Robinson replaced starter Jay Tibbs with Dave Schmidt at this point.  After walking the first batter he faced (Franco) Schmidt got Joe Carter to ground out to end the inning.

The O's got a run back in the fifth on a Sheets RBI single but the Indians got it back in bottom of the inning.  For the second inning in a row Hall led off with a single and moved to third on Snyder's single.  He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Upshaw but the Orioles threw out a base runner for the second straight inning when Orsulak nailed Snyder attempting to move up to second on the fly out.

That was pretty much the end of the ballgame.  The Orioles got a couple singles in the eighth that ended up chasing Indians' starter John Farrell but their closer Doug Jones came in and closed it out with a perfect inning and a third.

April 17 vs the Indians

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: L
Score1-4
Streak: L12
Record: 0-12
Rank: 7th
GB: 10.5

A fairly unremarkable game.  The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Dave Clark singled Brook Jacoby in.  The Orioles tied it up in the bottom of the third (a Joe Orsulak ground out scored Terry Kennedy) but the Tribe went ahead for good in the top of the fourth by scoring two more runs (Mel Hall knocked Jacoby in on a ball Fred Lynn misplayed in right - Hall got credit for a double and went to third on the error and then scored on Cory Snyder's sacrifice fly).  They scored another run in the seventh when Jay Bell brought Hall in with a groundout.

April 16 vs the Indians

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: L
Score0-1
Streak: L11
Record: 0-11
Rank: 7th
GB: 9.5

This was an incredibly frustrating game.  Mike Morgan pitched an absolutely beautiful game.  He scattered two hits and two walks in nine innings.  No Indian batter made it to second base while Morgan was on the mound.  Unfortunately the Orioles batters couldn't do much better against Greg Swindell.  They rallied in the bottom of the ninth when Fred Lynn and Eddie Murray hit back-to-back singles to start the inning.  But the inning ultimately ended with the winning run stuck on third as Rick Schu flew out for the third out.  The Indians took the lead in the top of the eleventh when Cory Snyder (who had reached on a walk) scored on Willie Upshaw's single off Dave Schmidt.

The Orioles made it interesting in the bottom of the 11th.  Bill Ripken led off the inning with a single off of Swindell who was still in the game after 10 innings(!).  Swindell got lifted for Doug Jones who got Jim Traber to hit into a fielder's choice for the first out.  Eddie Murray followed with a double to right field that Traber stopped at third on.  Frank Robinson inexplicably did not pinch run for Traber until after Murray's double, bringing in Rene Gonzalez who could not help but be faster than Traber.  After Cal Jr lined out to Jones for the second out, Larry Sheets was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Terry Kennedy came in to pinch hit for Rick Schu and struck out to end the game.

That's three straight nights of one-run losses that the Orioles simply could not get a break in.  It would be another week before they'd get that close again.

April 15 vs the Indians

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: L
Score2-3
Streak: L10
Record: 0-10
Rank: 7th
GB: 9.0

For the second night in a row the Orioles lost a game that they could have easily won.  The Indians went ahead in the second inning on a solo home run by Cory Snyder but the Orioles countered in the bottom of the inning with a two run shot from Larry Sheets.  Scott McGregor pitched much better in his second start of the season, allowing only the one run on five hits and three walks in the first seven innings with six strikeouts.  The eighth inning, however, was his downfall.  After getting Pat Tabler to ground out to Cal Jr to start the inning McGregor gave up a game tying home run to Joe Carter.  After Ron Kittle followed Carter with a double, Frank Robinson brought in Doug Sisk in relief.  Sisk immediately gave up a single to Brook Jacoby that brought pinch runner Dave Clark around with the eventual winning run.  Sisk then got Snyder to hit into an inning ending double play but the damage was done.  Despite pitching well for most of the game McGregor was saddled with his second loss of the season.

With their season opening losing streak now at 10 games, the Orioles had tied the 1968 White Sox for worst start to a season in 67 years.  The record for most losses at the start of a season was 13, set by the 1904 Senators and matched by the 1920 Tigers.  The Orioles had three more chances to avoid making history.

In their sixth game of the season the Orioles had the fourth complete game thrown against them, this time by Greg Swindell.  The biggest positive for the O's from this game was that they had their first home run of the season - a two run shot by Rick Schu in the fifth.  Mike Morgan took the loss, giving up seven earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Another game that was over relatively quickly.  Scott McGregor made his first start of the season and gave up five runs (although only four were earned) on seven hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings.  The former 20 game winner (1980) took the loss while the Indians' Rich Yett went 6 1/3 innings to get the win.  Dan Schatzeder got the save - he was the first pitcher to get a save against the Orioles in 1988.

Another day, another dozen runs given up.  The Indians put this one out of the way pretty quick, scoring five in the bottom of the second and four in the bottom of the third to go up 9-0 after three innings.  Tom Candiotti pitched the third consecutive complete game victory against the Orioles.  He lost the shutout in the ninth inning on a Larry Sheets RBI single.  At this point the Orioles have now been outscored in four games 30-2!  Mike Boddicker took the loss for the Orioles, dropping his record to 0-2.

April 8 at the Indians

Opponent: Cleveland Indians
Outcome: L
Score: 0-3
Streak: L3
Record: 0-3
Rank: 7th
GB: 3.0

First road game of the season and second shutout in three games.  It was the Indians' home opener and they drew 53,738 for the game.  It was scoreless into the seventh when the Indians staged a two out rally off Orioles starter Mark Thurmond.  A single by Cary Snyder was followed up by walks to Mel Hall and Jay Bell to load the bases.  Manager Cal Ripken Sr. replaced Thurmond with Doug Sisk who promptly walked the first batter he faced (Andy Allanson) to force in Snyder.  Julio Franco followed with an infield single that somehow knocked in both Hall and Bell although Allanson was thrown out at third to end the inning and the scoring.  Indians pitcher Scott Bailes threw a complete game shutout to get the win.
